Meta Said to Plan Camera-Free Luna Glasses for Connect
Meta launched Meta Glasses in June with EssilorLuxottica. The company is now said to be preparing a second pair without a camera. The project’s internal name is Luna. Reports say Meta may preview it at Connect on 23 and 24 September. An October sale is also rumoured. Audio, not photos, would be the focus.
The Information first described the plan. Luna would appear at the developer conference. Two frame styles are named: Clubmaster and Burbank. Six microphones and speakers near the ears would let a wearer talk to Meta AI by voice. No onboard camera would be required.
The frames are expected to look closer to ordinary glasses. Temples may be slimmer than on current camera models. A side button would summon the assistant.
The move appears aimed at privacy criticism. Camera glasses have drawn complaints about recording bystanders without consent. Current Meta Glasses use an LED when capture is on. Critics say that light can be covered or ignored. A camera-free model would avoid that hardware dispute. Microphones would still raise separate questions about audio capture.
Meta’s existing glasses launched around mid-year. They include a 12-megapixel camera with a 100-degree field of view. They also use the Muse Spark AI model and offer live translation across 20 languages.
Luna remains unconfirmed by Meta. Price, battery life, and a full feature list have not been published. Connect should show whether the camera-free glasses are real and how soon they ship.
