Google launched the Pixel 11 series in India and other global markets on August 12. The company held the Made by Google event for the announcement. Alongside new smartphones, a smartwatch and its first Bluetooth tracker, Google also revealed fresh features for both old and new Android devices.
On the sidelines of the event, the company showcased Tap to Send. This function lets users bring one Pixel phone close to another Pixel handset. They can then share contact information, photos, videos and other media files. The feature works in a way similar to Apple’s AirDrop.
Google has started rolling out Tap to Send to select Pixel phones. In a blog post, the company announced the launch of this new functionality. It now reaches Pixel 6 and newer models. The list includes the latest Pixel 11 lineup. Users can share contacts, photos, videos and media files with other Pixel owners through Quick Share.
The feature combines Quick Share with Near Field Communication, or NFC. Users simply bring eligible Pixel devices close together or tap the phones. The intended file then transfers quickly. Instead of relying only on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, Tap to Send uses the Quick Share system along with NFC.
People can start a two-way contact exchange from the home screen. They just bring the devices closer. For photos and videos, users open the Share Sheet. From there they tap the two eligible Pixel phones together. The transfer begins automatically.
Furthermore, Google confirmed that Tap to Send will expand beyond Pixel devices. The company will first bring the feature to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8. Other Android phones will receive the update later this year.
