OpenAI Boosts ChatGPT Memory for Smarter and More Personal Conversations
OpenAI has announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system. The update helps the chatbot use information from past conversations more effectively. It also improves how ChatGPT remembers user preferences, ongoing projects, and personal details over time.
The company designed the changes to fix problems like outdated memories. Moreover, the new system works better for a large and growing number of users. OpenAI built the upgrade on a redesigned architecture that manages memory more efficiently at scale.
OpenAI Introduces Dreaming Architecture
In a recent blog post, OpenAI explained the new memory system called Dreaming. This technology runs quietly in the background. It organizes and refreshes details from earlier chats.
As a result, ChatGPT keeps relevant context without users repeating the same information. The feature is currently rolling out to Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States. However, support for more regions and Free or Go users will arrive in the coming weeks.
Building on Earlier Features
This latest release improves memory tools introduced over the past two years. OpenAI first launched Saved Memories in 2024. Users could then ask ChatGPT to remember specific facts.
A year later, the company added an early version of Dreaming. It allowed the chatbot to reference past conversations more easily.
The updated system now focuses on three important areas. First, it retains useful context from previous talks. Second, it applies user preferences more consistently. Third, it keeps stored information relevant as situations change.
Clear Improvements in Performance
OpenAI shared internal benchmark results with the announcement. These numbers show strong gains across all areas.
Factual recall accuracy rose from 67.9 percent to 82.8 percent. Preference adherence increased from 55.3 percent to 71.3 percent. Additionally, performance on time-sensitive memory tasks jumped from 52.2 percent to 75.1 percent.
New Tools for Users
Users now get access to a helpful memory summary page. This page displays everything ChatGPT has learned over time. People can easily review the stored details. They can also correct errors, remove information, or highlight topics they want the chatbot to remember.
Greater Efficiency and Wider Access
OpenAI also reduced the computing power needed to run Dreaming. These efficiency gains will help bring the feature to more users. At the same time, existing Plus and Pro subscribers will enjoy greater memory capacity.
This upgrade marks another step forward for ChatGPT. It makes conversations feel more natural and personal. Users can now enjoy smoother, more helpful interactions without starting from scratch each time.
The changes reflect OpenAI’s continued effort to build smarter and more useful AI tools.
