Apple Tops Global Smartphone Market in Q1 for the First Time
Apple has achieved a major milestone in the smartphone industry. According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, Apple secured the top position in global smartphone shipments for the first time in the first quarter. The company recorded strong growth while many competitors struggled.
Apple’s global smartphone shipments rose by 5 percent compared to the same period last year. In contrast, some vendors saw their shipments drop by as much as 19 percent. Apple captured a 21 percent market share during this quarter.
The success came mainly from high demand for the iPhone 17. Apple also benefited from its premium positioning and well-integrated supply chain. Rising RAM prices affected many brands, but Apple remained largely protected. In addition, aggressive trade-in programs and strong customer loyalty helped the company grow further.
Apple performed especially well in the Asia-Pacific region. Countries like China, India, and Japan contributed significantly to its growth.
Performance of Other Brands
Samsung held the second position with a 20 percent market share. However, its share declined by 6 percent. Xiaomi followed in third place with a 12 percent share, which dropped by 19 percent.
Oppo and Vivo took the fourth and fifth spots with 11 percent and 8 percent market shares respectively. Both brands also saw small declines in their positions.
Meanwhile, smaller non-Chinese brands showed impressive growth. Google grew by 14 percent year-over-year, while Nothing recorded a 25 percent increase. Still, their overall volumes remain low, keeping them outside the top five.
Rising RAM Prices Affect the Industry
The global smartphone industry currently faces pressure from rising memory prices. Increased demand for DRAM and NAND memory in AI servers has pushed costs higher. Many companies have raised device prices as a result.
Apple, however, continues to stand strong due to its premium strategy and efficient operations.
Future Plans for iPhone 18
Apple is making changes to its launch schedule. Reports suggest the company will not release the standard iPhone 18 in 2026. Instead, it plans to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable model in September 2026. The base iPhone 18 is expected to arrive in spring 2027 alongside the more affordable iPhone 18e.
Early leaks indicate that the standard iPhone 18 may have only minor design changes.
In summary, Apple has strengthened its leadership in the premium smartphone segment. While the industry deals with rising costs and slower growth, Apple continues to deliver consistent results through smart strategies and strong customer demand.
