Microsoft Extends Windows 10 Security Support Until October 2027
Microsoft has given Windows 10 users more time to stay secure. The company quietly extended its Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme. As a result, eligible users can now receive critical security patches until October 2027.
Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 last year. At that time, the company advised users to either upgrade to Windows 11 or join the ESU programme. Initially, the ESU option was set to expire in October this year. However, Microsoft responded to user feedback and added one extra year of coverage.
This extension helps millions of people with older PCs. Many devices do not meet Windows 11 hardware requirements. Therefore, the move provides valuable breathing room for users. They gain additional time to save money or plan a device upgrade.
Microsoft shared the update in its official support documents. The company clearly stated, “Windows 10 support has ended. You can enrol in ESU any time until the programme ends on 12 October 2027.” Moreover, users who already joined the programme need not take any action. Their coverage will continue automatically.
One ESU licence covers up to 10 devices. Users must sign in with their Microsoft account to enrol. In addition, only specific editions qualify. These include Windows 10 version 22H2 Home, Professional, Pro Education, and Pro Workstation. Devices also require the latest available update for successful enrolment.
Microsoft offers this service at a cost. However, it delivers important security updates. The company still recommends upgrading to Windows 11 whenever possible. Users should note one key warning. Devices remain more vulnerable to viruses and malware before they join the ESU programme.
