Now, fresh reports point to even bigger changes ahead for the iPhone 18 series. Apple plans major display improvements. The company will adopt advanced LTPO+ panels, according to South Korean outlet ETNews.
These LTPO+ displays use oxide TFTs for transistors. As a result, they offer better brightness uniformity, quicker response times, and stronger power efficiency. Moreover, the panels may include under-display infrared sensors.
This innovation could enable true under-display Face ID. Face ID would then work seamlessly beneath the screen. Consequently, Apple might ditch the pill-shaped Dynamic Island notch entirely. Instead, future models could feature just a tiny hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera.
Apple will source these advanced panels from Samsung Display and LG Display. BOE Display supplied some panels for the iPhone 17 lineup. However, quality issues sidelined the Chinese manufacturer. The complex LTPO+ technology demands higher precision, so BOE likely stays out of the iPhone 18 supply chain.
Apple also prepares its first foldable iPhone, often called the iPhone Fold, for 2026. Samsung Display will serve as the exclusive supplier for its foldable screens. The company has reportedly solved wrinkle issues by designing the panel to fold left and right along a vertical axis.
