American Express Unveils NFT Passport Stamps for US Cardholders

American Express has launched a blockchain-based feature. It allows US cardholders to collect digital stamps as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Ethereum’s layer-2 Base network. These digital keepsakes, called Amex Passport, enable travelers to commemorate their trips securely and decentralized.

Key Features:

  • Digital Stamps: Record country visited, short description, and date earned
  • Customization: Highlight memorable experiences like monuments, meals, or hotel stays
  • Privacy: No personal data included to protect user privacy
  • Non-Transferable: Stamps are exclusive to individual cardholders
  • Sharing: Stamps can be shared on social media or saved to devices

Why It Matters:

  • 73% of respondents want digital ways to commemorate trips
  • 56% miss receiving physical passport stamps at international borders
  • NFTs have seen a revival, with trading volumes reaching $578 million in August 2025

Industry Context:

Other companies experimenting with NFTs include:

  • Lufthansa Airlines: “Uptrip” loyalty program with NFT trading cards
  • Mastercard: “Artist Accelerator” program with exclusive music content
  • Starbucks: Discontinued “Starbucks Odyssey” with NFT-based rewards

The Amex Passport feature is part of a broader trend of blockchain adoption, with potential applications in various industries
